Should I iron my fabric before starting this sewing project?  Normally I would say no because I have a pretty good handle on how fabrics react to heat.  Going back to the first sentence well let’s rephrase it in this way. It’s always a good idea to test the heat limits of your fabric especially when combining it with other fabrics. What may seem to work with normal heat may not work when the handle on the iron or the heat gets turned up a few notches.  When working with a swatch of fabric that the dress-maker intends on using as a lining, cut out a small sample and test it on low heat and then again on high heat.

It all seems like a no brainer, but this week I had the pleasure of unsewing a jacket twice the first time the color combinations were not working I will take the responsibility for not thinking outside of the box on that.  The second time, well I was distracted, I was completely done and thought I was going to iron out the seams and trim the ends.  About that time I smelled something burning, I accidentally placed the iron on my lining and for some reason the combination of fabrics were not compatible.  Unfortunately it meant going back to the sewing table removing the seams, find a better piece of fabric for my lining and then try it again for the third time.

What is Non-Woven Fabric? April 5, 2012

Nonwoven fabrics are broadly defined as sheet or web structures bonded together by entangling fiber or filaments (and by perforating films) mechanically, thermally or chemically. They are flat, porous sheets that are made directly from separate fibers or from molten plastic or plastic film. They are not made by weaving or knitting and do not require converting the fibers to yarn.

Nonwoven fabrics are engineered fabrics that may be a limited life, single-use fabric or a very durable fabric. Nonwoven fabrics provide specific functions such as absorbency, liquid repellency, resilience, stretch, softness, strength, flame retardancy, washability, cushioning, filtering, bacterial barrier and sterility.

Examples of the current uses of nonwoven fabrics:

  • disposable diapers
  • sanitary napkins & tampons
  • sterile wraps, caps, gowns, masks and drapings used in the medical field
  • household and personal wipes
  • laundry aids (fabric dryer-sheets)
  • apparel interlining

Oh good grief, there were six of us, going to the movies, why in the world did anyone not call ahead for the tickets, it made me wonder where we stored our brains that day.  Regardless we had a young man with us that was not taking no for an answer so, we decided that we would catch the next show which would not start until 10:40p.m.   This time, we purchased tickets ahead of time, we go back to another Sister’s house for a quick bite and honestly to get some rest, it was a long day of running around.  Well, at this point we need to make the best of it, because we will not go back home empty-handed.  Now keep in mind that the movie was over 2 hours long, which means it will be about 1:30a.m. before we would leave the movie theater.

Well the only thing left to do is have a family sleep over and honestly we could not have planned it any better.  Everyone chose a spot; the beds were covered with semi-disposable pillow cases and semi-disposable bed sheets.  With everyone settled in bed, the unexpected occurred.  It started raining what a great ending to a long day.  The next morning once everyone was up and around we stripped down the beds discarded the bedding, prepared a light breakfast and we all headed back home.  Although the day started out rough, we could not have asked for a better ending.

The release of Hunger Games was a family affair in our household.  We had planned for weeks to see this spring blockbuster movie together.  The plan was for everyone to meet at one place in order to check out the new Super Duper Fancy Theatre in town.  I was supposed to be at the spot by 3:15p.m. on Saturday, well for me it was going to be a 40 minute drive, I left the house fifteen minutes later than I was supposed to and still had to do a drive by at the credit union.  Now keep in mind two hours earlier I had talked to one of the sisters and although she was on my route she declined the ride.  Lucky me, so in my mind I was making a quick stop and then getting on the highway.

Just as I had hopped from one highway to another, my cell phone rings, it was the Sister that did not want a ride.  She had changed her mind, well of course why not; I found the closest exit and headed back into town.  We meet at the local Wal-mart, she climbs in the car and back on the highway we go, well at this point, and it was obvious we would miss our movie time.  So we get on the phone and at that time change the meeting time.  We decided that it was best if we stayed close to the theatre to get good seats.  By this time it’s 5:45 the movie was set to start at 6:15p.m with drinks in hand we arrived at the ticket counter eager for our adventure only to be informed that they were sold out.

Undeniably the best thing that happened to me two weeks ago.  Heading out to a business trip, I had everything in order, bags packed, tickets printed,  keys in hand, off we go.  One last thought, change the bed sheets, family would be doing me a huge favor by house sitting for a few days.  I always keep extra linen in the closet; however I have one family member that will not sleep anywhere but in her own bed.  I immediately panicked, purse and keys in hand head back into the house, I begin pulling out bed sheets then remembered that I have disposable bed sheets and pillow cases on hand.  To make everyone feel special, each bed was laid with a new set of Sweet Dreamzz semi-disposable bed sheets and pillow cases.  The cool thing that happened when I returned home four days later fatigued and homesick, I pulled the sheets and pillowcases off the beds and pitched them.  What a way to add a hint of convenience to my life.  All is well in my household again, now if I could just find someone to unpack our suit cases!

The third step in this project is to test the compatibility level  of the fabrics that I’ve chosen, although my cotton fabric is absorbent it does not serve my purpose,  the concern is that the weight of the cotton fabric is more of an obstacle than I anticipated.  Back to the drawing board, replacing the cotton fabric with a terry cloth for weight and feel purposes. The final cut means to drop the flannel stripes it does not serve my purpose, keep the flannel fabric it tells a story,  is colorful and soft this is a wrap, it’s time to start to get to work on this baby robe.

The next step of our new baby robe is the feel of the fabric  when it comes in contact with the most important client in the world.  Baby first of course.  The first test failed, so the next fabric swatch has to be considered, the original mint green fabric has some level of softness but really not what I’m after.  Back to the inventory on hand, my fifth choice is another piece of mint green fabric simply because after laundering a swatch the piece of fabric was softer. The exterior of my product is flannel so I feel good about that choice. I added a third selection of  fabric, so let’s see how all it all comes together.

Design tip of the Day, use the right thread for your fabric March 24, 2012

When you decide what your sewing project for the day is going to be, thread your machine, cut a small piece of fabric to work with, test your thread and tension to be sure you have the correct thread weight for your sewing project before you go ahead.  If your fabric is yielding a gathered piece of fabric on a straight stitch, first adjust your tension, if the issue remains your thread could be the problem.  A quick trip to the fabric store with your sample is a good idea to find the right type of thread for your project.

Green is one of those colors that we’ve used on a limited basis in our collection, not really sure why.  In an effort to correct tht oversight, we created this light weight jacket and rain coat, made of non-woven fabric and cotton.  Water-proof, reversible, fun, functional, doing our part in saving the earth by using a man-made fabric.

Filled with excitement, we thought we would do something different with this fabric we combined it with what else but brown and baby blue polka dots, the insert and back is made of non-woven fabric.  Non-woven fabric is one of those fabrics that will imitate other fabrics, depending on the end use; it tends to compliment certain types of fabric.  Focusing on the baby line, so what else a fitted crib sheet with matching burp rag made of a nurse rhyme that is familiar and fun.

Humpty dumpty falls of the wall, the cow jumps over the moon, the plate and spoon run off the fabric pattern, the clock of course does its own thing.  In this playful pattern it all works in bringing back good memories.  But it provides Sweet Dreamzz Textiles the opportunity to create a sample product that is fun, functional, innovative and colorful.
